What are the Industry Skills Books?

Industry Skills Books, What They Are and How to Complete Them

The Industry Skills Books are the placement-style component of your qualification. They demonstrate that you can apply your skills in a real fitness setting under supervision.

Who can be your supervisor? Your supervisor must hold a Certificate III in Fitness or higher (Cert IV, Diploma, or related qualification). They observe you completing each activity in the book and sign off on the checklists.

Multiple supervisors. Where a facility has multiple PTs and trainers, more than one qualified supervisor can observe and sign off different activities. Just make sure each supervisor signing off holds the required qualification.

What gets signed off? Each activity has a checklist. Your supervisor observes you doing the activity, then completes the checklist with their signature. The timesheet at the back of each book records the hours you've completed under supervision.

How is this different from video assessments? Video assessments throughout your course are separate evidence. You record yourself demonstrating skills for your assessor to mark. The Industry Skills Books are observed in person by your supervisor in real time, recording that you can perform in a live working environment.

Where do I send the completed book? Once your supervisor has signed everything off, scan the completed pages including the timesheet, then submit them via your Learner Portal. If the file is too large, upload to a cloud link and share that instead.

If you're having trouble finding a qualified supervisor, contact us. We maintain a list of fitness facilities that have supported students across Australia, and we may be able to suggest local options.
